About the packages

Heroes' distribution is modular. It is distributed as five packages, with different version numbering and release schedules.

Here are the four main packages. The two sound packages are optional, your don't need them if you don't want sound output.

* heroes 0.21
source code for the game executable (required)
* heroes-data 1.5
levels and pictures (required)
* heroes-sound-tracks 1.0
musics (optional)
* heroes-sound-effects 1.0
sound effects (optional)

If you like the sound-tracks, you may want to download this additional package, which will override some of the sound tracks from heroes-hq-sound-tracks with high quality versions of the same modules.

* heroes-hq-sound-tracks 1.0
high quality sound tracks (optional)

Even if Heroes runs under windows, it is still a Unix style program. That is, you run it and specify options from the command line, using the how terrifying DOS box :o). In late 2000 Stéphane Denis created a graphical front-end to the game. Unfortunately the game has evolved and this front-end is probably not up-to-date. Anyway, you can get it here.
